King's Cross Station is one of the busiest transport hubs in London and the Grade I-listed building is undergoing major redevelopment as part of one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe.
The new Western Concourse project triples the size of the current station area, introduces shops, cafés and restaurants, and provides improved access to the Underground (Tube), the new Thameslink station and St Pancras International station. The project includes a dramatic wave-form canopy roof which covers almost 60,000 sq.ft of floor space including a mezzanine floor.
A Delmatic system controls lighting throughout the project and provides energy-efficient, addressable control of lighting in front-of-house and back-of-house areas as well as controlling decorative concourse and façade lighting. The system controls normal and emergency lighting and includes comprehensive integration with the central battery system: custom hold-off modules and software were developed to accommodate the start-up delays of discharge lighting following an emergency condition.
Lighting is configured into a variety of modes or scenes which are activated automatically at scheduled times, via a solar controller or by photocell sensors, while the complete system is managed and monitored across the IP network using animated graphical software.
Delmatic were involved in the earliest stages of design and worked to develop both the system application and integration with the station network. Quality & reliability of the highest order are crucial to this major public infrastructure system and Delmatic's track record in providing controls for major transportation hubs was instrumental in selection for this project.
