Dubai Metro has entered the Guinness World Records as the longest driverless metro system in the world, comprising a 74 kilometre network running underground in the city centre and on elevated viaducts along key urban corridors.

Delmatic won the initial contract for the first phase of 29 stations plus depots and central control centre on the Red Line in 2009, and were subsequently awarded the second phase for 18 stations on the Green Line which opened in September 2011.   The opening of the Green Line is expected to add 120,000 passengers a day to the existing 180,000 passengers using the network each day.

Dubai's rapidly expanding economy, growing population and severe traffic congestion necessitated the building of an urban rail system to provide additional public transport capacity, relieve motor traffic, and provide infrastructure for additional development.   The station interiors follow the themes of the four elements of nature: Water, Air, Fire and Earth while the shell-shaped roof of the elevated stations evokes Dubai's heritage of pearl diving.

The Delmatic system provides energy-efficient, addressable control of lighting in front-of-house and emergency egress areas of each station, and integrates with the rail network OCS SCADA system for remote management and monitoring. Lighting is configured into a variety of modes or scenes – daytime, night time, dawn/dusk, maintenance, closed modes – which are activated automatically at scheduled times. Secure local override is available to the stationmaster from a custom console at each station which displays the active scene, allows changeover from automatic to manual override settings, and indicates the health of the communications network.

Delmatic were involved from an early stage as part of the project team and worked to develop both the system application and integration with the SCADA network.  Quality & reliability of the highest order were crucial to this major public infrastructure system and Delmatic's record over many years was instrumental in its selection for the project.
